Frequently asked questions
How do I get a good identification?
Use daylight, fill the frame with the fossil, and add a coin or ruler for scale. Try a second angle if the result looks unsure.
How many free identifications do I get?
3 for every new user. The timeline, catalogue numbers, field data and labels stay free. Premium removes the identification limit.
Is my photo stored on your server?
No. The photo passes through our server to the AI model and is not stored.
How do I export my collection?
Open Settings and choose export. You can save CSV, JSON or PDF, and import a JSON file later. From My Fossils you can also export the catalogue as a PDF.
What is the catalogue number?
Every saved specimen gets its own number in the form HT-0001. Numbers are assigned in order and never reused, even if you delete a specimen.
How do I print specimen labels?
Open a specimen and tap Label to share it as an image or PDF. To print several at once, open My Fossils and choose Print labels: you get a sheet with cut lines on A4 or US Letter, depending on your region.
How do I restore my subscription?
Open Holotype, go to Settings or the upgrade screen and tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple ID you subscribed with.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the iPhone Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose the app and tap Cancel Subscription. You keep access until the end of the current period.
Will my data move to a new iPhone?
There is no iCloud sync. Your data lives only on this device. Export your collection to a JSON file and import it on the new iPhone.
How do I contact support?

How do I ask for a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in and choose the purchase.
